John Butterworth

John Butterworth Architect PLLC is a New York based practice specializing in contemporary residential design. Our work focuses on the synthesis of space, natural light, materials and detail to achieve continuity and clarity of design and expression. The firm emphasizes collaboration between the design team, client, consultants and craftsmen, all of whom play a vital part in the realization of a well executed project. Recent work includes projects in the New York metropolitan region, Colorado and Paris, France.

John founded his studio as John Butterworth Architect in 1994, after years working for many diverse firms such as Amman & Whitney, George Ranalli Architect and Thad Hayes, Inc.

John earned a Bachelor of Arts from Washington University in St. Louis in 1984 and a Master of Architecture from the Yale School of Architecture in 1988, where he studied with Cesar Pelli, George Ranalli and Tadao Ando. He was honored to receive a travel scholarship from Tadao Ando to study the architecture of Japan.
